Arc'teryx Thorium Down Hoody - Men's review
So, when I was looking at jackets and the prices were about the same, I had to decide between the Thorium and the Cerium. Here's why I went with the Thorium.
First off, it's warmer. I live in the Northeast. Yeah, the Thorium's got 750 - fill down, and the Cerium has 850 - fill. But the Thorium has more down stuffed in it. And they've got this Coreloft stuff in the hood, shoulders, underarms, and cuffs. That means the down stays more in the main part of the jacket, keeping me toasty.
Second, it's tougher. The Thorium's made of 30D rip - stop nylon. The Cerium's only 10D. Sure, the Cerium's lighter and easier to pack, but when I'm wearing it outside, I don't have to worry as much about the Thorium getting ripped.
Another thing is how they fit. The Thorium's more roomy, and the Cerium's more snug. I already had an Atom AR that's tight and can be worn under other stuff. So, the Thorium was the better pick for wearing over other clothes.
But it's not all perfect. One problem is it leaks feathers. It's worse than other down jackets I've had. Feathers are sticking out of the seams already.
And then there's the price. A light down jacket from Uniqlo costs way less. It's also pricier than most jackets from other outdoor brands.
One more thing that's a bit weird. The logos on my other Arc'teryx gear are kind of gray and dull. But the logo on this Thorium is really white. When I put them all together, it looks off, like it might be a knock - off.
Now, I know down jackets aren't Arc'teryx's big thing. But they still know what they're doing. Like, they use this cool way of filling different parts of the jacket. Compared to non - outdoor brands, their stuff works better. And compared to other outdoor brands, Arc'teryx looks more chill and good - looking (except for that logo).
If you're new to outdoor gear and there are a million options out there, I think going with Arc'teryx is a safe bet. You're less likely to make a bad choice, especially with their classic stuff like the Beta, Gamma, or Atom lines.
