HOKA Rincon 4 Women's Road - Running Shoes review
The HOKA Rincon series is all about those lightweight, cushioned running shoes. They're light, they've got good shock absorption, and they bounce back well. Most runners can use 'em for all kinds of jogging distances, and they're okay for some speed training during your daily runs, too.
The Rincon 4's midsole got an upgrade to this ultra - light EVA foam. They made it 2 millimeters thicker, but somehow, the shoes got lighter. The feel when you step is just right, soft and springy. And they seem to absorb shock and bounce back better than before. They've also got this speed - rolling tech that makes your steps smooth and easy, so you don't have to work as hard when you run.
The top part of the shoe, the upper, is made of this breathable mesh. It's light, soft, and it fits your foot nice. Feels good and airy on your feet. The bottom, the outsole, is a rubber - like EVA. They made it cover more area, so it should be more durable and less slippery.
When I first put 'em on, I thought they were pretty cool. Light as a feather. But then I just walked around my house in 'em for two hours, and man, did the problems start showing up. About the only good thing left was that they were light. Here's what went wrong:
1. Terrible traction: They're super slippery on tile floors. That's a huge bummer. The sole looks like the one on the Clifton 9, but it just doesn't grip like it should. I mean, compared to the Clifton 9, these are a total fail when it comes to not slipping.
2. Uncomfortable fit: I picked the wide - width version, but my toes still felt squished. The Clifton 9's wide - width is way more comfortable. The front part of the shoe, the toe box, is really stiff. Maybe it'd be okay for trail running, but for running on the road or just walking around, it's no good.
3. Lousy sole: At first, when I stepped on 'em, they felt light, soft, and a bit springy. But after a while, I realized they don't really absorb shock well. It's like stepping on a cheap piece of foam. It's just soft, but it doesn't do anything to keep your feet from feeling every step. And there's no real bounce back. If you're on your feet for a long time, it's gonna hurt. This EVA stuff they used is just not up to par.
Bottom line, these shoes just don't cut it. For commuting, they're not as comfy as the Nike Pegasus 41 or the On Cloudsurfer. For running, cheaper shoes like BMai and XTEP Champion 3 are way better. Forget about comparing 'em to other high - end cushioned running shoes. Luckily, I didn't take 'em outside yet. I'm sending 'em back. I'm done with HOKA. I'm switching over to On Running. I'm gonna get an On Tilt and see how that goes.
