The mid-height provides solid ankle support, which is great for me since I'm prone to rolling them. And the Vibram Megagrip outsole is awesome. The traction is excellent, giving me confidence on varied terrain. The biggest trade-off with all that cushioning is what hikers call "ground feel" – the ability to feel the texture of the trail beneath your feet. With these, you're a bit insulated. If you prefer feeling every rock and root, these might not be your first choice. They also felt a little bulky at first. It took me a few hikes to adjust to the wider base, but it wasn't a big deal. One thing that still bugs me, though, are the laces! They keep coming untied unless I double-knot them.
All in all, the HOKA Anacapa 2 Mid GTX boots are a good option for hikers who value comfort and cushioning. The waterproofing works well, the ankle support is welcome, and the traction is top-notch. The downsides are the reduced ground feel, slight initial bulkiness, and those pesky laces. If HOKA could fix the laces and maybe improve the ground feel a bit without losing too much cushion, they'd be even better. As they stand, I'd recommend them to folks looking for a comfortable, supportive boot, especially those with joint issues or who hike long distances. Just be prepared to double-knot those laces, and you'll be all good!
