KEEN NXIS EVO: My Honest Review of These Trail Boots

KEEN, you know, that brand that makes those comfy sandals with the toe protection? Well, they also make hiking boots, and I've been putting these through their paces out here on Navajo land. Using Experience: Let's talk about how these boots feel on the trail. First off, right out of the box, they were surprisingly comfortable. I didn't experience any of the dreaded break-in period blisters. The fit is true to size, which is always a relief when ordering online. I’ve been wearing these on everything from dry, dusty trails to rocky inclines, and even some unexpected creek crossings. The KEEN.DRY waterproof membrane definitely works. My feet stayed dry even when I accidentally stepped in a deeper puddle than anticipated! The traction is pretty solid, too. I felt confident navigating loose gravel and uneven terrain. They’re not clunky or heavy like some hiking boots can be, which is a major plus when you're covering some miles. I even wore them on a longer backpacking trip of several days, and my feet felt great at the end of each day. I was a little surprised to see how well they hold up on longer trips because they feel so lightweight, but don’t let that fool you! I will say though, in hotter weather, my feet did get a little sweaty, even with breathable socks. So, keep that in mind if you're hiking in the desert or a similar climate. But overall, the comfort and performance have been impressive. I did swap out the insoles for my custom orthotics, but even with the stock insoles, they felt pretty good. I felt comfortable recommending it to my cousin who is just getting into hiking as well.
Okay, so the verdict? These boots are pretty darn good. The pros: lightweight, waterproof, comfortable right out of the box, and solid traction. The cons: they can get a little warm in hot weather. For improvements, I'd love to see a bit more breathability in the upper material, maybe some strategically placed vents. I think a wider range of color options wouldn’t hurt either! Overall, I definitely recommend giving these boots a try.
