My Experience with Salomon X Ultra 4 GORE - TEX Low Hiking Shoes for Men
Hey, y'all! I'm not a super - hardcore outdoor guy, but I've taken my Salomon X Ultra 4 GORE - TEX Low Hiking Shoes for Men out a bunch of times. I usually go on an outdoor trip about once a month, and if I've got the time, I'll hit the mountains. I've worn these shoes on snow, mud, and rocky - sandy trails, so here's my mid - level usage review.
Overall Experience
1. Light as a Feather:These shoes are crazy light. Each one weighs just over 280 grams, which is only a bit heavier than an average phone. You don't feel any heaviness at all when you put them on. They make walking a breeze, and it's a huge plus for long - day outdoor activities.
2. Temperature Comfort:Even though they've got that GORE - TEX material, wearing them in the summer or when it's hot (like 20 - 30 degrees) can be a bit stuffy. But when it's around 10 degrees, they're perfect. When it's 0 degrees, you might feel a little chill, but it's not a big deal. Overall, they're better for cooler weather.
3. Shoelace and Crease Issues:The shoelaces stay tied pretty well. I only had them come undone once during a 3 - hour hike. But man, these shoes wrinkle up really easily. I got creases in them the very first time I wore 'em. It's a bit of a bummer for how they look.
Grip Performance
The grip on these shoes is amazing. Whether I'm walking through mud, on a forest trail after it's rained with all that rotting leaves, mud, rain, and moss, or even on a smooth, dry rock with no grooves, they hold on tight. I feel super confident on my feet, and I haven't slipped once. It's like they're glued to the ground!
Waterproofing
I tested the waterproofing at a ski resort in Utah. It was snowing hard, and after cars drove around, the snow turned into slushy ice - water. It covered my shoes up to the top and part of the laces. I walked around in it for like ten steps, and my feet stayed dry. I did feel a tiny bit of cold, but the shoes kept the water out great. I didn't have to worry about soggy socks!
Protection
When I'm on those gravelly, rocky mountain paths, I don't have to dodge sharp stones. The soles are thick, so I don't feel any poking. And the ankle support? It's top - notch. During a 3 - hour mountain hike, it saved my ankles from twisting at least five times. I feel safe and secure in these shoes.
Style and Outfit Match
These shoes are really easy to match with different outfits. I can wear them with jeans, and it doesn't look weird at all. But if I'm going for that outdoorsy, mountain - style look, they're a perfect fit. They go with everything from cargo pants to hiking shorts.
I was really torn between these and the Lowa Zephyr MK2. The Lowa's exoskeleton design is so cool, but it's not as good at gripping on wet surfaces. Since I want to go to all kinds of places, I decided on the Salomon. So far, I'm really happy with my choice. Sure, they wrinkle easily, the laces come undone if I don't tie them tight, and they're not the best for just walking around the city. But for someone like me who loves the outdoors but isn't super - intense, the outdoor performance of these shoes is exactly what I need.
